- I'm a fan of biographies. When I was growing up, my favorite book was Chuck Amuck by Chuck Jones. I think I bought it as a kid for the flip book that comes with it: turn the pages and Wile E. Coyote chases the Road Runner around the edges of the page. But it's also one of the most beautiful books about the creative process I've ever read.
- I admire novelists more who shift sets, lights, scenery and play every role in their mind for you. My style of writing requires collaboration with others to really spark. But I think of Dickens, Cervantes, Marquez or Morrison and I can describe to you the worlds they paint and inhabit. Generating empathy and creating a world with just words is the closest thing to magic.
- For "Hamilton" I would write at the piano until I got something I like. I would play it and put it in my headphones and then walk around until I had the lyrics. This is where notebooks come in, to write down whatever comes to mind and bring it back to the piano. I have to be a walker to write lyrics.
- There's been a lot of theater that uses hip-hop, but most of the time it's used as a joke. Ain't it funny that these characters rap? I treat it as a musical form and a musical form that allows you to put in a lot of lyrics.
