There are many overused (and misused) superlatives applied to beloved musicians after their deaths, but when it comes to calling Tina Turner the Queen of Rock n' Roll, that's just a fact.
Tina Turner sang with a sharp authenticity and unbridled exuberance unmatched in the 1960s. She taught Mick Jagger how to dance, inspired everyone from David Bowie to Beyoncé, and made her final career comeback in the 1980s, when her box office breakthroughprivate dancethe album catapulted the 40-year-old survivor to the top of the pop world.
As described in the 1993 biopic starring Angela BassettWhat does love have to do with itTurner's life was not easy. She grew up in rural Tennessee, started singing with future husband Ike Turner when she was just a teenager and suffered from his abusive and controlling behavior for years before finally running away and going it alone. His solo success was not immediate. After years of hard work, closed doors and missed calls, she made an incredible career comeback in the 1980s that in many ways remains the gold standard for any rock or pop star supposedly too old to write songs.
In honor of the life and work of an inimitable icon, we rounded up 15 of Tina Turner's best songs. Although it contains many chart hits - including "What's Love Got to Do With It," her #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 - this is not a chart-based list, but an editorial one. It includes songs she released during her pioneering career as part of Ike & Tina Turner, as well as solo classics.
"Golden Eye" (1995)
With Pierce Brosnan taking over the role of 007 after the dwindling return of films starring Timothy Dalton, James Bond made a cultural comeback almost as impressive as Tina's - so it was only natural that she graced the franchise with her determination and presence in this film . Brassy, title trackgolden eye, co-written by Bono and The Edge. He might hold back a touch—just playing with the punches, if you will—but still get the kill in the end.- Joe Lynch
"Typical Male", nº 2 no Hot 100 (1986.)
Turner's comeback in the '80s was surprising for a number of reasons, not least the fact that in a world focused on female age (yes, not much has changed) she climbed the charts at 40 while still flaunting her sexuality without remorse . and self-confidence. -own. In the smash hit "Typical Man," with Phil Collins on drums, she uses her wiles to "tip the scales in her favor" on an idiot lawyer who is simply "a typical man, a typical man."– J Lynch

Regardless of your feelings about Ken Russell's approach to the 1975 rock opera musical, there's more.tommie, Tina Turner gave a spectacular performance in the film. The Who's original version is surprisingly decent for a song called "The Acid Queen" - a fault thankfully corrected by Turner's rather shrill, menacing speech.– J Lynch
"Funkier Than a Mosquita's Tweeter" van Ike & Tina Turner (1971.)
The B-side to the duo's iconic cover of "Proud Mary", this song - written by Tina's sister Aillene Bullock - is an angry move by a "dirty old man" masking his intentions with tiresome "heaven and glory" laments. Over relentless, piercing percussion and a reverberating bass line, Tina slowly but surely works her way through the creepy old coot's flaws before the chorus' gloriously playful farewell smashes it to pieces like it's just a mosquito pestering her arm.– J Lynch
"River Deep - Mountain High", od Ikea i Tine Turner, br. 88 od Hot 100 (1966.)
Hardly the dominant hit that producer Phil Spector had hoped for, "River Deep - Mountain High" is nonetheless a bright, clear gem in his extensive back catalog. True to the song's title, Turner's voice comes from deep in his chest one moment before soaring into the upper register the next. And it takes a professional like Tina to sing lines about loving a grown man "like I loved that rag doll" with a tear in her voice and make you believe it.– J Lynch
"It's Gonna Work Out Fine", de Ike & Tina Turner, nº 14 no Hot 100 (1961.)
Ike and Tina saw and picked up Mickey and Sylvia's "Love Is Strange," which became one of their best rock classics, a lovely back-and-forth over a thick-knob Southern groove. Tina's ability to stay guttural and visceral without being dramatically distracting was unmatched as she sang to the less-than-committed Ike, "If your love is half true / Like the love I give you / Oh baby, I think it's will work okay ." Bad news for the lady. Anna Mae about it, unfortunately, but the horrors of the couple's denouement do not undermine any of its insidious, stinking vitality.—Andrew Unterberger
"Break All the Rules", #74 na Hot 100 (1987.)
It was not a big hit like the previous single "What You Get Is What You See", the title trackBreak all the rules(his successful successorprivate dance) showed that Turner's blend of effortless cool and rock 'n' roll was unmatched in the '80s. While many rockers adhere to exhibitionist conventions, Turner - who broke almost every industry rule in suing pop stars in the '80s - had a far better motive for subverting expectations than most.– J Lynch
(Video) Tina Turner Greatest Hits Full Album - Tina Turner Best Songs Playlist"I Can't Stand the Rain" (1984)
On paper, Tina Turner's version of "I Can't Stand the Rain" shouldn't work—reimagining Memphis soul legend Ann Peebles' beloved R&B classic for a rock-inspired album seems like a daunting task for anyone. However, "Rain" showcases Turner's impressive range when she was at the top of her game, giving the song enough flavor to make it her own while encompassing all the pain and heartbreak in the soulful lyrics Peebles wrote, she explores. .-Stephen Daw
"We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)", no. 2 on the Hot 100 (1985)
The mid-'80s turned into the first golden age of the power ballad on blockbuster soundtracks, and you had to know that Tina Turner was going to get her own on that front after her comeback. The strength and texture of his voice elevates this rather absurd anthem out of thirdsludi maxmovie — which Turner also starred in, by the way — into something truly exciting and resonant whose ties to the film can be forgotten as long as you ignore the mention of "Thunderdome" in the chorus. And if you think of the whole thing as a response to 'Holding Out for a Hero' from 1980s music diva Bonnie Tyler, even better.– A. Unterberger
"Nutbush City Limits", vrata Ike & Tina Turner, b. 22 on the Hot 100 (1973)
Driven by a warm, swampy guitar riff, playful bassline and booming horns, "Nutbush City Limits" - written by Tina herself - is a funky take that evokes nostalgia for her rural Tennessee childhood, from church to home. "horse city".– J Lynch
"Better be good to me", no. 5 of the Hot 100 (1984)
Amidst the turmoil of Turner's historic comeback withprivate dance, "Better Be Good To Me" definitely proved that the reign of the queen of rock n' roll would not be short. Giving Tina her second consecutive top 10 hit on BillboardThe Hot 100, sparkling rock ballad (originally recorded by the British rock group Spider in 1981) is a shining example of the star's exceptional vocal talent - even through ornate guitar riffs, Turner "won" the audience with his unique and emotive voice. And as a survivor of an abusive marriage, Turner makes it clear that while she is open to love, her hard-won independence and self-esteem will not be compromised.– S. Daw
"The best", no. 15 years of the Hot 100 (1989)
It's right in the chorus: Tina Turner was simply 'The Best'. To thisForeign affairssingle — which has become a signature song for Turner despite being first recorded by Bonnie Tyler — she sings about an unrequited love interest, adding insatiable desire to the mischievous lyrics. "If you come to me / give me everything I need," she growls, infusing her vocals with a deep love and wonder that this beat sends straight into the air.– Katie Atkinson
"Proud Mary", Ike & Tina Turner, b. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 (1971.)
Yes, it's technically a Creedence Clearwater Revival song, but Turner more or less claimed ownership when he first covered the Southern-style showstopper in 1971. starting slowly - "we like to do things nice and easy every now and then" - before the roof inevitably blows off, because "somehow we never seem to do anything nice and easy".— Katie Bain
(Video) T.i.n.a T.u.r.n.e.r Greatest Hits ~ Top 100 Artists To Listen in 2023"Private Dancer", no. 7 no Hot 100 (1984)
Tina's version of Mark Knopfler's "Private Dancer" featured one of her most subtle and hidden vocals. In both the song and the Brian Grant-directed video, she plays a disillusioned "taxi dancer," a woman who dances with strangers for money. He looks tired and defeated as the song begins, but gradually gathers strength. Dire Straits intended the song for their 1982 albumlove above gold, but Knopfler thought it was wrong for a man and passed it on to Turner. Thank goodness, because Turner's recording ranks among the best of all time – and that's saying something.– Paulo Verde
"What's love got to do with it", no. 1 on the Hot 100 (1984)
Tina Turner didn't even want to record "What's Love Got To Do With It" when her manager suggested the song, she said in a 2021 documentary.Tinathat she found the song "terrible". But the slow burn of synthpop would inevitably lead to a change of heart as it became the biggest song of her career. Turner walked a fine line between love and hate in high heels, embodying the longing and disdain that comes with the need of a heart when the heart can finally break. He topped the Hot 100 for three weeks, won three Grammys and earned a title in his 1993 biopic. This anthem of resilience became the key song of his unparalleled career.– K. Bain
